- New Life Beneath Sea And Ice: Scientists have long known that life can exist in some very extreme environments. But Earth continues to surprise us. At a European Science Foundation and COST (European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research) 'Frontier s of Science' meeting in Sicily in October, scientists described apparently productive ecosystems in two places where life was not known before, under the Antarctic ice sheet, and above concentrated salt lakes beneath the Mediterranean. In both cases, innumerable tiny microbes are fixing or holding onto quantities of organic carbon large enough to be significant in the global carbon cycle

- Radiation-proo f microbe uses its powers for good: Deinococcus radiodurans is probably the closest thing we have to a real superhero; not for nothing was it nicknamed Superbug and Conan the Bacterium. Its super-abilitie s include unbelievable resistance to radioactivity; immunity from heat, cold and acid; and the ability to survive in outer space. It was discovered by accident in the 1950s, when a tin of meat was blasted with radiation that was supposed to kill anything living inside. When scientists investigated later, they saw that the meat had spoiled, and growing happily on it was D. rad.

- 'Alien' Water Bears Boost Odds for Extraterrestri al Life: Astrobiologist s work at the cutting edge of scientific research, investigating the possibility of life elsewhere in our universe. They are, however, plagued by a single, potentially critical problem: a lack of samples. Studying alien organisms is natural

- Strain 121 - archaea hyperthermophi le bacteria -- Wikipedia: is a single-celled microbe, of the domain Archaea. First discovered 200 miles (320 km) off Puget Sound in a hydrothermal vent, it is a hyperthermophi le, able to survive and reproduce at 121 °C
- The Stuff of Life on Titan - Tholin -- Astrobiology Magazine: Neish used an electric discharge to generate tholins then She dissolved samples of the resulting material in water, and then, at a range of temperatures to, measured the rate at which the mixture hydrolyzed. May simulate Titan chemisrty
